Zulya is a special breed of musician. Her chilling and worldly voice espouses sentiments of other places and times, in languages both familiar and foreign. Having moved to Australia from her native Tatarstan in central Russia 10 years ago, she has crafted her own unmistakable sound of world music, deeply rooted in Russian and Tatar folk song, and sung in those languages, as well as English.

It’s the opportunity to perform and give back to the community that draws this musical family to playing with the Palmerston City Concert Band (PCCB). “I love live music and the ability to perform, and the Band gives me the opportunity to give live music back to the community; and it’s fun!” says Carol Atkinson, a former flute, now euphonium, player. Bruce Cartwright, a trumpeter, and Rochelle Cabry, a viola and bassoon player, echoes these sentiments.

“Riding the cyclonic winds out of Darwin” explains the bio of Terracotta Pigeons - formidable imagery to say the least. But the Pigeons have certainly made a good run out of their short time together, performing debut shows in Canada before heading back to their home town of Darwin to support national acts such as Wolfmother, The Presets and The Screaming Jets at the V8 Supercars, as well as performing at 2008’s Bass in the Grass.
