“Riding the cyclonic winds out of Darwin” explains the bio of Terracotta Pigeons – formidable imagery to say the least. But the Pigeons have certainly made a good run out of their short time together, performing debut shows in Canada before heading back to their home town of Darwin to support national acts such as Wolfmother, The Presets and The Screaming Jets at the V8 Supercars, as well as performing at 2008’s Bass in the Grass. Creative chief behind the band, Steven Smith, spent some time with us going over the creation of the Pigeons’ debut album – Ever-Forever-Never.
Smith originally hails from Roy Mackonkey, a band whom many locals would’ve seen live over the past 10 years at various pubs, clubs and in support of some of the biggest touring acts to come to Darwin. But his penchant for song writing wasn’t quite satisfied behind the drum kit, and so Terracotta Pigeons was born – essentially a one man band, with a steady live lineup.
“Well it started as a solo project, and it still is in so far as I wrote and recorded the album myself,” Steven explains. “But it’s hard to play all those instruments live at once” he laughs. “So, it’s a solo project in the sense that I performed everything, recorded everything myself, produced the album etc. That’s what I wanted -it’s a way for me to express myself in a different sense, and be totally responsible and in control of the result.”
And the result is nothing short of pounding. Ever-Forever-Never has an incredibly tight and focused sound, something clearly achieved through a dedication to perfection. The songs ride a fine line between heavy and catchy – unrelenting rock with enough hooks and melodies to stay stuck in your head for weeks. Live, this translates into a full-blown assault, with all the energy of a freight train rather unexpectedly colliding with the sun.
Ever-Forever-Never is available now from www.terracottapigeons.com and the iTunes store.
