Please tell us a bit about the production company behind Cinderella.
Fairy Lights Productions was started by Samantha Young and Bonnie Parker who first studied together at the Hayman Theatre in Perth. Samantha went on to graduate from NIDA Acting in 2007 whilst Bonnie studied at VCA in Design and Production. On moving to Darwin they found a wealth of passion and creativity but no formal arts institution or industry that promises ongoing work. So Samantha and Bonnie have geared their theatre company to provide opportunities for young actors and technicians to work alongside skilled professionals.
Why choose Cinderella?
We chose Pantomime because it will entertain a Darwin audience and show them a great time. Pantomime is a hilarious genre that includes clowning, pies-in-faces, song and dance, as well as those naughty references that are cleverly disguised. Cinderella is one of the best Pantomimes we could access and one of the most familiar stories. It is not the ‘Walt Disney’ Cinderella, it is a fairytale with a twist. People of all ages will have a great time at this show, whether 3 or 93!
What other projects have cast members been involved with?
Six professional actors are joining us from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to work alongside 12 Darwin locals. The experience of the cast varies greatly. Kelly Paterniti, who plays Cinderella, has most recently come from shooting the feature, Griff the Invisible, as well as a guest role on Ch7’s Packed to the Rafters. Our Prince Charming graduated NIDA Acting in 2008 and is flying up at the last minute after closing in the acclaimed Bliss at Belvoir St Theatre in Sydney.
Laura Pike, who is playing the evil Stepmother Lady Halfcock, recently performed in Half Way There, presented by the Darwin Festival. Even the Director, Samantha Young, will be stepping up to the stage. These actors are working alongside some very talented Darwin performers including Phil Tarl Densen whose short work was recently nominated for an AWGIE award. The Darwin brood also includes stand-up comedians, musicians, dancers and even three high school students, who have demonstrated incredible talent and dedication in working with adult performers. This show is sure to be fun and exciting.
Cinderella will be showing from Monday 30 Nov until Saturday 5 Dec at various times. More information to be had at the Darwin Entertainment Centre website or call (08)8980 3333.
