The Bak’bididi Festival is on again in the remote Indigenous community of Ramingining. The Festival showcases the artistic, musical and sporting talent of Yolngu people in communities in East Arnhem Land. As well as a program full with music, traditional and contemporary dance an art exhibition, spear throwing and a full sports program. A special feature of this year’s festival will see the songs from ‘Dunganda Street Sounds’ performed by the local musicians from Ramingining.

Dunganda Street Sounds – New Tracks from Ramingining is a blend of new music with over 20 local musicians involved. This new release from the Ramingining Community has some of the freshest, most innovative sounds produced in Arnhemland. Dunganda Street Sounds recently picked up two awards at the NT Indigenous Music Awards for the film clip of the song ‘Senor’, awarded DVD Film Clip of the Year, while Jimmy Djamunba’s rendition of ‘Stringy Bark’, and Bobby’s ‘Bush Gurrwiliny’ took out the NT Indigenous Music Award for ‘Best Traditional Recording’ this year.

The songs are sung in 4 languages: Dhuwal, Ganalpingu, Warrgaluk, and Spanish. Michael Dawu was inspired to write ‘Senor’ (in Spanish) after a European traditional dance tour a few years back. This developed into a mixture of traditional language, Spanish, chants, didgeridoo, and irresistible dance beats, check it out at the Festival October 29 – November 1.
